Jardin Majorelle or the Majorelle Garden is a twelve-acre botanical garden in Marrakech. The garden was originally owned by Jacques Majorelle a painter originating from France. The property was later put up for sale after his death. On learning that a hotel construction was planned for the plot of land, co-founders of YSL, Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Berge bought it in 1980 and undertook to restore the neglected garden.
Irrigation systems were installed for the distribution of water to the specific needs of each plant. New plant species were added and a team of gardeners were engaged to maintain the garden, ponds and fountains.
An interesting item to note is the use of the color blue, more specifically ‘Majorelle Blue’ in the garden. So unique is this blue it is said to have been patented. Yves Saint Laurent receives endless source of inspirations in Jardin Majorelle. After his death in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden
