Chez Ali restaurant

Chez Ali, Marrakech, Morocco

A dinner and show package was included in our tour itinerary. Arriving at Chez Ali, you walk down a long corridor filled with musicians and dancers dressed in traditional costume in different groups. You pass them and sit in one of the many Arabian like dinner tents where tables are laid for diners.

For dinner, we were served couscous, tajine among others and fruits for desert. Dinner was good although nothing to write home about as we have tasted similar dishes in our hotel. During the course of our dinner, we were treated to a varieties of tribal music inside the tent by the cultural troupes we passed-by earlier at the entrance.

After dinner, an equestrian show started outside the tent in an open-air arena. Nights are chilly so better wrap up to keep warm. About 20 riders on horseback, some seems unable to handle their horses, did a handful of very basic acrobatics. Otherwise, they ran around the pitch shooting their guns a couple of times. If the food is nothing to write home about, the horse show is nothing to write more here.

All in all, this is commercial dinner and entertainment show.

Hotel Atlas Asni, Marrakesh

Hotel Atlas Asni, Marrakesh, Morocco

We arrived to our hotel in Marrakesh late in the evening after an exhausting 10+ hours bus ride from Fes. The only stops we made was in the winter resort of Ifrane and at Beni Mellal for lunch. We were assigned to Hotel Atlas Asni which has a huge lobby & dining/breakfast room. The sprawling garden at the back was beautifully kept with lots of orange trees bearing fruits. The room is large and comfortable.

Tonight we will catch up with our sleep and tomorrow we have a full day’s itinerary in Marrakesh.

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakech, Morocco

Jardin Majorelle or the Majorelle Garden is a twelve-acre botanical garden in Marrakech. The garden was originally owned by Jacques Majorelle a painter originating from France. The property was later put up for sale after his death. On learning that a hotel construction was planned for the plot of land, co-founders of YSL, Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Berge bought it in 1980 and undertook to restore the neglected garden.

Irrigation systems were installed for the distribution of water to the specific needs of each plant. New plant species were added and a team of gardeners were engaged to maintain the garden, ponds and fountains.

An interesting item to note is the use of the color blue, more specifically ‘Majorelle Blue’ in the garden. So unique is this blue it is said to have been patented. Yves Saint Laurent receives endless source of inspirations in Jardin Majorelle. After his death in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden
