Milan Airport

Milan, Italy

April 2016

Our long haul holiday for 2016 starts in Italy. Point of entry is Milan Malpensa airport. Arrived at 19:25 by Oman Air after a transit at Muscat of 2 hours. Total flight time of about 11 hours from Kuala Lumpur. Past passport control, our bags are already on the baggage carousel waiting to be picked up.

Exiting arrival hall, we turned left and walked ahead to search for the escalator down one level to the Malpensa Express train counter to buy tickets. The tickets cost €12. Another level down by escalator, the train was already waiting for it’s passengers. The Malpensa Express terminates at Milano Centrale where we had booked a hotel nearby. There are also shuttle buses available to Milan Centrale but being cheaper by just €2, we opted for the train.

The train is clean, comfortable and the journey took 52 minutes. As there are a few stops during the journey, 1st timers into Milano Centrale should be on the look-out for the station.

Hotel Bernina

Hotel Bernina, Milan

April 2016

We had chosen to stay at Hotel Bernina, Milan due to its close proximity to Milan Centrale station. It’s just a 5 minutes walk from the exit of the station and it’s step free all the way until the front door of the hotel itself. Then, it’s a couple of steps to the reception. There is a small lift to take you up to your floor. The room is a little smallish but at the rates on offer, it was reasonable as it includes breakfast and wi-fi among others. There are also other hotels beside and to the front of Hotel Bernina to choose from.

Ample electrical power sockets are in the room but it’s rather odd as it’s non-standard. Refer the 2 photos below. The normal (thin) 2-pin plug used in Malaysia can be inserted without adapter. Voltage output is at 220-240 volts. There are public parking in-front of the hotel.

The main reason we chose this location is due to the fact many halal eateries are around this area. We’ll give the locations in the next post.

Halal Food Milan

Halal Food, Milan

April 2016

One of the reasons we’ve chosen to stay at Hotel Bernina is due to the close proximity to Milano Centrale as well as close to halal eateries. There are not less than 5 eateries and if you care to Google and do a ‘walkabout’ using Street View, you will find many more. Any way, these 5 are those I spotted and took pictures of and had the opportunity to had lunch at Istanbul Doner.

As the name implies, they serve doner kebab but I had rice with chicken while my wife had a pizza. Nothing exceptional but you’ll get a decent meal. Generally a lunch in Italy will set you back €7-€10. All these eateries are within 5-10 minutes walking from Hotel Bernina.
